PHYS 0083 - QUANTUM COMPUTING FOR EVERYONEMinimum Credits: 3 Maximum Credits: 3 Long Description Quantum Computing: The Promise and the Hype; the Technology and the Reality. Come learn about quantum computing: how is it being used today, the potential for the future, the different technologies under development, and the path toward commercial application. This course will provide a basic general and accessible introduction to quantum computing. We will discuss the weirdness of the quantum world, why quantum computing has the potential to change computing from cryptography, simulation, and handling information. We will alternate weeks of (1) inspiration, talking about the potential of quantum computing for society (business, research, and broader uses), with weeks where we (2) focus on the technology behind it: why it works, the current state, and the future. The course will feature guest lectures from people actively working in business, industry, and academia. This course assumes no pre-requisite knowledge of physics or quantum systems. Basic algebra will be used to discuss what is hard for classical computers and what quantum computers will be able to do. STEM majors looking for a more mathematically in-depth introduction should instead take PHYS 1470 Foundations of Quantum Computing and Quantum Information. Academic Career: Undergraduate Course Component: Lecture Grade Component: LG/SNC Elective Basis
