ENGFLM 0580 - SPORTS MEDIA & MEDIATIONMinimum Credits: 3 Maximum Credits: 3 Long Description Sport, athletics, and play have been vital elements of culture for millennia. Since antiquity, artists have sought to capture and render sporting expression through a variety of forms, whether for purposes aesthetic, historical, or propagandistic. This course examines the many ways that sport has been mediated by the visual arts, with particular attention paid to the moving image and 20thcentury athletic expression. Through careful study of global, national, and local sporting events and movements, we will consider sport's relation to image-making in general terms as well as in its utmost particularities. Our readings will challenge us to critically analyze the links between the sporting experience and warfare; the raced, gendered, and ableist history of sports media; and the erotics of mediated sport. Class visits and assignments will encourage us to better understand theory through practice. This course counts for the Film and Media Studies major and minor as a Category II elective.
