ENGCMP 1170 - WRITING PITTSBURGH

Minimum Credits: 3
Maximum Credits: 3
Long Description This course is dedicated to writing about Pittsburgh's people and places through the lens of art, artifact, and narrative. Students will explore the city's unique neighborhoods, gather its stories, and look at the art that represents this city. You'll conduct research in the archives, look at historical maps and photographs, read accounts by former residents and talk to people who live here now. Following the contours of the city's history and geography, you'll sketch a series of small portraits attuned to how the past shapes the present. The final project will be an essay intended for a lay audience that draws on your reading and forays into the city to tell the story of the Pittsburgh we have inherited and the Pittsburgh where we live, study, and work, now.
