Long Description The African Popular Theater course is designed to introduce students broadly to the theatrical performance traditions in Africa. The aim is to provide students with an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the role that popular theater played, and continues to play, in social dynamics among African societies. It is thus broadened to cover the scope and variety of popular theaters in Africa, ranging from pre-colonial traditional theater through the modern/ contemporary theaters into the present era. The format is divided into two major parts - Part I: African Traditional Drama; and Part II: African Modern Drama/Theater. Under African Traditional Drama, are two sections. The first provides the "Historical framework" of the drama by examining the roots, origins, and the characteristic features of African drama and theater that have existed since the Pre-Colonial era. The second, in the form of a Case Study, analyzes some selected popular traditional dramas. Under the African Modern Drama and Theater, are two sections. The first provides the "Historical framework" of the current modern drama/ theater, by looking at the more recent 'literary' and developmental theaters, which include new theatrical forms such as the syncretic popular theaters, literary dramas, traveling theater movements, and theater for development. The second, in the form of a Case Study, analyzes some selected modern/ contemporary dramas and theaters.
