FMST 1251 - CINEMAS OF THE MIDDLE EAST & NORTH AFRICA

Minimum Credits: 3
Maximum Credits: 3
Long Description The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is a vast entity with a plethora of climates, geographies, cultural practices, social formations, histories, languages, habits, ethnicities, and religious affiliations. This course explores through both national and transnational approaches how cinema from the region not only allows for a multilayered understanding of major historical, political, social, and cultural issues but also gives insights into the embodied anxieties and aspirations of its peoples in relation to postcolonial nationalist projects, popular uprisings against autocratic regimes, armed conflicts, and everyday life. To deepen our knowledge of these themes, we will watch diverse types and genres of films like melodramas, auteur films, performative and autobiographical documentaries, and experimental fiction films. We will also read a variety of texts, scholarly and other, to help us unpack some of the issues raised in the films we are watching and understand their historical contexts. This is a Category 1 course that counts for the Film and Media Studies major and minor.
