ARTSC 0080 - FIRST YEAR GLOBAL EXPERIENCEMinimum Credits: 3 Maximum Credits: 6 Long Description First Year global experience course is intentionally designed to engage student's understanding of themselves and of their responsibilities as citizens of the world, as well as in-depth learning of the target country's culture, history and unique social and environmental pressures. The course is comprised of several academic pre-departure meetings that will take place during the spring semester, followed by immersive in-country learning. Global experience will include: Academic classroom learning: Students will engage in academic work to learn about the target destination culture, history and main social and environmental pressures throughout pre-departure and in-country components of the program Cultural activities: Students explore landscape, culture, and history of the location. Community engagement: Students learn from and gain insight from local organizations and community members about the lived experience, culture, and community challenges and opportunities of the location. Service work: Students support community development efforts and deepen their understanding of the reality on the ground in the target location. Critical reflection: Through moments of pause (individually and as a group), students can reflect on the impacts of the experience, consider how to apply the learning to their communities and lives, and think about whether their definition of what it means to be a global citizen has shifted and why that's important.
