ENGCMP 0545 - WRITING FOR ACCESSIBILITYMinimum Credits: 3 Maximum Credits: 3 Long Description Creating a more just world means creating a more accessible world, and we can do that with and in our writing. Through readings and discussions on issues of disability justice, linguistic justice, and access, this course will first offer students a framework for understanding the social and cultural significance of creating accessible writing and using writing to increase the accessibility of non-written material (e.g. audiovisual content). Students will then learn and apply a variety of strategies to make their academic and public/professional writing more accessible for a broad range of audiences with and without disabilities, drawing from and extending principles of Universal Design. Students will also write in genres meant specifically for accessibility purposes, such as alt-text descriptions of visual material, image descriptions of social media posts and museum objects, and audio descriptions of video clips. Throughout the course, students will carefully consider the rhetorical context of their work to inform the writing choices they make, including user needs and goals that may differ or compete with one another. By the end of this course, students will produce a polished project that prioritizes accessibility in its original design in a genre of their choosing.
