MEMS 1122 - FUNDAMENTALS OF MAGNETIC MATERIALS AND APPLICATIONS

Long Description This course will cover the fundamentals of magnetic properties of materials and will provide an introduction to a number of important applications. Classes of materials to be covered include elemental metals and metallic alloys as well as ceramics with an emphasis on ferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic material systems. Topics to be discussed in detail include quantum mechanical exchange interactions, magnetic anisotropy (shape, magnetocrystalline, exchange bias, induced, etc.), saturation magnetization, magnetostriction, temperature dependence of magnetic properties including statistical mechanics treatments of magnetic moment ordering.
