RELGST 1170 - ARCHAEOLOGY OF ISRAEL-PALESTINEMinimum Credits: 3 Maximum Credits: 3 Long Description This course will focus on the archaeological record in Israel-Palestine from prehistory through the Early Islamic period. Students will learn about places that have aroused controversy because of their problematic relationship to biblical and other ancient texts and/or because of their location in politically contested space. As part of the "exotic Orient," Palestine was explored in the 19th and early 20th centuries by western expeditions serving colonial interests. More recently, archaeological inquiry in Israel-Palestine has played a role in the social imagination of inhabitants of the region, linking contested territory to ethnicity and religion. It has also been drawn upon by religious groups who want to enhance the pilgrimage experience, walk in the footsteps of characters from the Bible, or prove the authenticity of biblical history. In addition to exploring these issues, the course will examine how sites and artifacts from the region are presented to the public.
