PHIL 1385 - ETHICS AND ECONOMICSMinimum Credits: 3 Maximum Credits: 3 Long Description Ethicists and political philosophers are often interested in which economic policies we should adopt. For instance, should we have a school voucher program? Should healthcare be subsidized by the state? Should income or resources be redistributed to achieve a more equitable society? The field of welfare economics is also interested in questions like these, and has developed a comprehensive ethical theory which allows the theoretical tools of economics to be brought to bear on, and offer answers to, these questions. Arguments imported from welfare economics are frequently cited in public policy debates. Figuring out what we think of these arguments requires a careful study of the theoretical and ethical assumptions implicit in the framework of welfare economics, as well as an appraisal of the kinds of ethical views welfare economics commits itself to.
