RUSS 0870 - FILM HISTORY LAB: EARLY RUSSIAN AND SOVIET CINEMAMinimum Credits: 3 Maximum Credits: 3 Long Description This course introduces students to Russian and Soviet cinema from the coronation of Tsar Nicholas II to the death of Stalin in 1953, exploring how films were made, watched, and understood during this formative period. Alongside canonical early films, students will discuss popular genres such as comedy, melodrama, and animation. Designed as a "film history lab," the class emphasizes hands-on learning through research and creative project work. Students will actively contribute to online resources related to Russian and Soviet cinema, gaining experience in public-facing scholarship and digital research.
