RUSS 0811 - MADNESS AND MADMEN IN RUSS CULTUREMinimum Credits: 3 Maximum Credits: 3 Long Description This course explores the theme of madness in Russian literature from medieval times through today. Emphasis will be placed not only on literary works, but also on painting, music, and cinema, as well as nonfictional documents. While surveying representations of mental illness in culture, we will have a chance to touch on many significant texts and works of art created by major Russian writers, artists, composers, and film directors; such as Fedor Dostoevsky, Modest Mussorgsky, and Sergei Eisenstein, among others. All readings, discussions, and written work for this course will be in English. No prior knowledge of Russian literature, history, or culture is required or expected.
