ENGCMP 1410 - ADVANCED RESEARCH/DOCUMENTARY WRITING

Minimum Credits: 3
Maximum Credits: 3
Long Description This advanced course focuses on research as it supports writers working in documentary, journalistic, and professional contexts. Students will explore three modes of research-based nonfiction: literary journalism devoted to social change; research-based writing that investigates corporate practices and ethics; and documentary work designed to raise awareness, provoke conversation, and honor human experience. Reading published examples across all three modes (books, articles, and film documentaries) students will develop a sustained research project of their own on a social issue or problem of their choosing. Throughout the course, students will examine the complex relationships between writer, subject, audience, and argument, asking how research authorizes what writers say, how it generates theory, and how writerly choices shape the impact of the final work.
