ENGCMP 0510 - NARRATIVES OF THE WORKPLACE

Minimum Credits: 3
Maximum Credits: 3
Long Description What do you want to be when you grow up? This course takes the cliche "You are what you do" as a starting point to investigate the intersection of narrative, work, identity, and social structure. We will read and respond to academic and literary writing and media representations of forms of labor ranging from truck driving to housekeeping to managing nuclear power plants. Along the way, we will explore questions such as, What counts as meaningful work, to whom, and why?, How do new technologies influence the organizing of work and professional identity?, and How are forms of labor intertwined with cultural ideas about gender, race, class, ability, sexuality, and age? The course also invites students to study the kinds of work and workplace cultures they hope to enter when they graduate, and to explore the connections between education and the professions.
