AFRCNA 2309 - AFRICAN FEMINISMS, MOVEMENTS AND CONTENTIONSMinimum Credits: 3 Maximum Credits: 3 The African Feminisms course is designed to introduce students to the strands African feminisms, their evolution, the debates and thoughts that shaped them and what they all embody. The course will explore both the intellectual and the movement dynamics that have shaped the political project of African feminisms as a label that coalesce a multiplicity of ideas rooted in Africa's position shaped by imperialism colonialism, capitalism, religion, culture and patriarchy. In particular, the course will stimulate students to think beyond labels to identify individual and group actions that embody the feminist ethos of equality, equity, human rights sovereignty of the state and women's bodies among others. The course will deepen understanding of African feminisms through a contextualization of the emergence of the intellectual projects that characterized them and the movements that articulate the various strands. Through history and contemporality, the course will create the space for the discussion of contentions and contestations of African feminisms and how they push the boundaries for understanding feminism in general.
