ANTH 2551 - PEOPLES IN CONTACTMinimum Credits: 3 Maximum Credits: 3 This course examines patterns of cultural, economic, biological, and linguistic exchange and interaction through major historic and pre-historic population migrations. We aim to assess how interactions between diverse communities at a micro-scale shape broader population movements. Multidisciplinary data sets are employed to detect and discuss evidence for the emergence of new group identities and strategies in contact and frontier zones. We discuss the long-term archaeological and anthropological implications for these instances of "ethnogenesis" and challenge traditional unilinear models for tracing and understanding migrations in the human past.
