ARTSC 1931 - FIELD STUDIES SEMINAR FOR DIRECTED RESEARCH

This course is for participants in the Dietrich School's Field Studies programs. The Field Studies programs support scholars conducting independently designed, faculty-mentored research across a wide range of disciplines, drawing upon content from both Pittsburgh and a Field Studies location such as New York City or London, United Kingdom. This research might be qualitative and/or quantitative in nature, taking the form of ethnography, archival research with manuscripts and/or other material, oral history, practice as research, theoretical research, as well as other forms. At the beginning of the term, students complete a Learning Agreement form, supplied by OUR, with an academic mentor from a Dietrich School department. Students spend the term conducting research on their topic and planning for their self-directed time on-site at a Field Studies location for either 3-5 hours weekly hours (1 credit); 6-10 weekly hours (2 credits); or 11-15 weekly hours (3 credits). Meetings consist of guidance for scheduling self-directed time while on-site, the practice of ethical research while serving as a visiting scholar, and planning for future research, among other topics. Additionally, students write a term-end reflection paper.
