This course engages with the diverse experiences that shaped the African continent and its people from our earliest ancestors to the colonial era. We will use foundational studies, new discoveries, and innovative theoretical approaches to critically examine models and assumptions about food systems, routes to complexity and empire, hierarchy, climate resilience and colonial encounters across Africa. Insights from the past are applied to discussions of modern issues across the continent that intersect with archaeology, heritage management, and decolonization efforts.
