CHIN 0083 - INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION IN CHINESE

This course helps undergraduate students develop an understanding of the cultural dimensions of conversation and communication when perspectives from different cultural traditions (e.g., Chinese, Western, etc.) are presented. We will be using authentic conversations between Chinese and American college students in a study-abroad context (Dorm Corpus) as our primary texts of analysis. Through the course, students will (1) be able to critically analyze a communicative event with a cross-culture perspective and appreciate how concepts of or ideologies in privacy, personal relationships, health, family, education, etc. may differ due to differences in traditional and transforming values; (2) develop their communicative competence performing in Chinese while understanding the target culture conventions; (3) understand their own cultural identity and raise awareness and sensitivity towards people with cultural and ethnic background that may differ from theirs, and apply such awareness and empathy when functioning in one's extended community; (4) gain knowledge of research and method of investigation pertaining to cultural dimensions of foreign language studies. This course is suitable for those with at least intermediate level oral proficiency and some reading proficiency in Chinese.
