How does our speech impact who we are? How does who we are influence how we speak? What, in other words, is the relationship between language, culture, and society? This course explores these questions starting from the assumption that language use is cultural practice and social action. Issues explored through the lens of language include power and identity; race, class, and gender; semiotics; ideologies of monolingualism and multilingualism; socialization; and many others. Linguistic anthropology offers powerful methodological and analytical tools to explain emergent social realities, exposing underlying processes and ideologies that organize society and culture.
