COUN 2756 - CRISIS COUNSELING, RISK MANAGEMENT AND DISASTER PREPAREDNESSMinimum Credits: 3 Maximum Credits: 3 Students review research on crisis theory, resolution, and resilience, and the impact of crises, disasters, and other traumatic events on persons across the lifespan. The course examines diverse crisis situations and the assessment and intervention strategies used by counselors to assist individuals, groups, and organizations in managing and resolving crises, including skill development for immediate responses to crises (Psychological First Aid) and skills for meeting needs of clients in the more extended aftermath (Skills for Psychological Recovery). Skills in prevention and response to community violence are also explored, including training in Counseling on Access to Lethal Means (CALM). Factors related to counselor resilience and burn-out assessment is also incorporated. The course reviews models for safety/risk assessment and management of harm to self and/or others; students demonstrate their competence in risk/safety assessment and in safety plan development via video recordings with simulated clients.
