ANTH 2501 - ARCHAEOBOTANY LAB METHODS: PLANTS, PEOPLE, & PLACES

Minimum Credits: 3
Maximum Credits: 3
This class introduces you to the objectives, methodologies, and applications of archaeobotany and provides you with hands-on experience working with plant remains found in archaeological sites. Archaeobotanists study plant remains to understand how ancient people interacted with their surroundings, sustained themselves, and used food to express social and political relationships. This course is designed as a practical laboratory experience, where each week, you will participate in seminars and laboratory sessions to develop the necessary skills for independent archaeobotanical research. We will analyze macrobotanical remains such as seeds, nuts, wood, and other tissues, which are often visible under low-powered microscopes. Students will learn basic identification skills, create a comparative collection, and analyze archaeobotanical samples from an archaeological site. In addition to sorting the samples, we will analyze the data, prepare interpretive reports, and discuss the results of our analyses.
