COUN 2766 - INTRODUCTION TO ASSESSMENT AND TREATMENT FOR CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTSMinimum Credits: 3 Maximum Credits: 3 This course focuses on three inter-related areas: 1) using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5TR) to classify mental health disorders in children and adolescents, as well as differential diagnoses, 2) employing a developmental perspective and a focus on the interaction of risk and protective factors in the child's multisystemic context (e.g., family, school, neighborhood), and 3) identifying evidence based interventions for treating mental health disorders in children and adolescents across delivery modalities within the continuum of care, including psychopharmacology. Readings will frequently be supplemented with audio or video clips of actual cases, and case studies for students to present and stimulate class discussions. Factors that influence the helping processes with children, including age, gender, and ethnic differences, and verbal and nonverbal behaviors, will be explored.
