COUN 2721 - CULTURAL CONSIDERATIONS IN COUNSELING

This course is designed to examine the practice of multicultural counseling, emphasizing awareness, knowledge, and skills development. Through rigorous self-examination, students will explore their own cultural identities, biases, and belief systems. Topics covered include foundational theories and models in multicultural counseling, the intersections of identity and oppression, strategies for promoting social justice and advocacy within counseling contexts, recognition and mitigation of implicit bias, effective cross-cultural communication techniques, and understanding the pervasive impact of microaggressions and generational trauma. Throughout the course, an emphasis is placed on fostering cultural humility and its importance in developing connections with clients from diverse backgrounds. Evaluation of learning outcomes will be conducted through a blend of theoretical exploration, experiential learning opportunities, and critical analysis of historical and contemporary cultural events.
