COUN 2739 - GROUP COUNSELINGMinimum Credits: 3 Maximum Credits: 3 In this course, students will learn the basic issues and key concepts of group process. Students will learn how to apply these concepts in working with a variety of groups. The following CACREP standards are addressed in this course: a) theoretical foundations of group counseling and group work, b) dynamics associated with group process and development, c) therapeutic factors and how they contribute to group effectiveness, d) characteristics and functions of effective group leaders, e) approaches to group formation, including recruiting, screening, and selecting members, f) types of groups and other considerations that affect conducting groups in varied settings, and g) ethical and culturally relevant strategies for designing and facilitating groups. Students will research a group intervention and develop an evidence-based group proposal. Participation in an experiential group for a minimum of 10 hours is required.
