Minimum Credits: 3
Maximum Credits: 3
This course will introduce advanced graduate students to utilizing empirically supported approaches and skills-based strategies when conducting counseling with couples and families. Students will expand their clinical competencies in case conceptualization from interventions with individuals to dynamic systems, learn techniques for identifying and setting goals for treatment, rehearse introducing communication and problem-solving strategies in sessions, and demonstrate competency in conflict management, emotion regulation, and using directive approaches with clients in sessions. This course will expose students to the dynamics of contemporary family structures, living patterns and lifestyles, and the challenges experienced by counselors when working with couples and families in distress. The learning environment will be active and student-directed, relying more on students' participation in class discussions, and small group discussions, case-studies, and role-plays, and less on passive learning strategies.
