ANTH 1808 - FROM THE HIMALAYAS TO ANDES THE CONSERVATION OF MOUNTAINS, ANIMALS, AND RIVERS

Minimum Credits: 9
Maximum Credits: 9
This course will focus on human ecology, conservation and biodiversity in the mountains of North India and Peru. Field study at different altitudes in the world's two most extensive and diverse mountain ranges will provide students with a detailed understanding of the complex interdependence of living systems in and across ecological zones ranging from the ocean to mountains upward of four thousand meters above sea level. As post-colonial nations in the Global South, both India and Peru are confronted by economic and environmental challenges closely linked to the conservation and use of water, land, and forest resources. The study of conservation policy and biodiversity in the Indian Himalayas and the Peruvian Andes will provide students with critical insights and comparative perspectives on complex, global problems in two important, fragile ecological zones.
