Julius Caesar is arguably one of the most prominent figures the world has ever seen, and his legacy continues to fascinate us - but who was he, really? This is not a Roman history course, per se; rather, in this Writing-Intensive course we will investigate the puzzling, manifold character of Julius Caesar as presented in a number of works ranging from Caesar's own writing, ancient biographies, Shakespeare's 1599 play, and multiple 20th- and 21st-century interpretations. Throughout the semester, students will engage with these presentations of Caesar with in-class discussion of our literary texts and frequent writing assignments. Indeed, this W-designated course will pay considerable attention to the development of writing skills, refinement of ideas, and improving the expression of ideas, with writing instruction thoroughly integrated into the course.
