HPS 2245 - EUGENICS AND SOCIAL DARWINISMMinimum Credits: 3 Maximum Credits: 3 This seminar will address efforts to manage human heredity and evolution. We will consider the origins social Darwinism and eugenics in the nineteenth century and its global rise in popularity in the early twentieth century. We will critically examine claims regarding the decline of eugenics in response to its uses in Nazi Germany, and consider late twentieth century efforts of population control, genetic counseling, genetic engineering, and gene editing as forms of eugenics.
