HPS 2162 - SCIENTIFIC METHODS AND DISCOVERYMinimum Credits: 3 Maximum Credits: 3 This course will examine the rich history of attempts to describe the methods of science and the processes of scientific discovery. We may consider, seventeen century defenses of inductivism, nineteenth century attempts to codify Newtonian methods by Herschel, Whewell, and Mill , twentieth century empirico-logical methods, and twenty-first century data-driven and automated methodologies. We will consider whether and how processes of discovery and innovation can be captured by such methodological investigations.
