PS 1621 - HISTORY OF FEMINIST POLITICAL THOUGHTMinimum Credits: 3 Maximum Credits: 3 This course will introduce students to the so-called first wave of feminist theorizing and activism. It aims to familiarize students with the main philosophical and political debates that concerned early feminists, with particular emphasis on the development of the woman suffrage movement in the United States. We will critically assess the struggle for suffrage in relation to the wider philosophical concerns of feminists and reflect on the strengths and limitations of first-wave feminism. We will also consider critiques of first-wave feminism from various subaltern perspectives and ponder the renewed relevance of first-wave insights in the current political context.
