MSBMS 2260 - DIVERSITY AWARENESS EXPLORATION IN THE BIOMEDICAL SCIENCESMinimum Credits: 1 Maximum Credits: 1 This course is designed to foster diversity awareness in the biomedical sciences. Students will explore the relationship between topics such as implicit bias, privilege and the social and structural factors within a biomedical frame. In addition, students will examine how these topics impact health, wellness, and disease. Diversity awareness is cultivated through exploration of oneself(beliefs, actions, patterns), how we see the world around us, and how others both see and experience themselves and the world. Students will engage in introspective reflection, gain knowledge from field experts, and hear first-hand experiences from individuals. Throughout the course, students will expand their capacity to seek, consider and adopt diferent perspectives while also learning about health disparities. Information gained in this course will prepare students to understand the complexity and nuance of social systems, social difference, health, and health care and how communities and individuals are impacted. Cultivating diversity awareness is a lifelong process. This course will build on existing knowledge and lay the groundwork for further exploration.
