PUBHLT 0401 - CAN ART HEAL? AN INTRODUCTION TO THE ARTS IN HEALTH RESEARCH AND INTERVENTIONSMinimum Credits: 3 Maximum Credits: 3 Can art heal? The short answer is yes, the longer answer is there are many forms of and ways in which art can impact health and wellbeing. Whether it be urban street murals, music and painting, theater and movement, or photography and film, all these forms can be powerful tools for benefiting communities. In this introductory-level course, we will explore the role of the arts from both research and intervention programming perspectives. Students will be engaged in experiential learning through various field visits and cross-disciplinary discussions. Throughout the course students will have the opportunity to develop their own arts and health projects with both local and global community arts organizations. Instructors will pull from their diverse experiences working at the intersection of the arts and health, such as Collaborative Filmmaking projects in Nepal, Madagascar, and the Republic of Georgia; Public Art, mental health, and COVID-19 in Pittsburgh; and creative projects they have showcased at the Smithsonian Institute, Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, and United Nations Headquarters in New York.
