Many of our values and tastes devolve from--or consciously react against--patterns that were established or reinterpreted five hundred years ago. The student who explores the renaissance, therefore, gains hold of one of the keys of Western civilization. He or she also acquires practice in critical reading, discussion, and the written expression of ideas.
