GER 2110 - INTRODUCTION TO LITERARY AND CULTURAL THEORYMinimum Credits: 3 Maximum Credits: 3 This course offers selected readings in 20th century literary theory, with emphasis on the German tradition. We examine such "schools" of literary theory as psychoanalytic (Freud), Marxist (Lukacs, Benjamin, Brecht), and reception theory (Jauss, Iser). Each is discussed within its historical context; moreover, the implications of each is tested in relation to a selected work of literature. In addition, we study the critical reception of these schools of thought, as well as their relevance to contemporary debates.
