This seminar concerns itself with the origin and early development of rhetoric. The focus is on the traditions of the Greek and roman cultures. Particular attention goes to the sophistical, Platonic, Isocratean, Aristotelian and Ciceronian traditions. Consideration is given to the cultural context from which these traditions emerged.
